There are various activities that you can enjoy with your basenji that allows this very athletic dog to show off his natural instincts and skills. It is both beautiful and exhilarating watching the Basenji compete in field events.
Lure Coursing
The hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to simulate escaping game. The sport was invented to recreate the physical requirements of open field hunting in a safer more controlled environment. The sport continues to test the natural function of todays sighthound.
OVAL TRACK RACING
In a nutshell, here's how a race meet works. Each dog runs in three heats or "programs" as they are known. Dogs compete only against other dogs of the same breed and a maximum of four dogs run in each race. Each dog earns points in each race, based on its placement in the race. After the three races are completed the dogs in each breed are awarded placements for the race meet, based on the point total earned during the meet. The top few finishers in each breed earn points towards an Oval Race Championship (ORC). The number of points earned is determined by the number of dogs in competition for that breed. Taken From NOTRA web site. |
AGILITY
In agility, a dog demonstrates it's agile nature and versatility by following cues from the handler through a timed obstacle course. The course has jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and other obstacles. Agility strengthens the bond between dogs and handlers, it is extremely fun, and it provides vigorous exercise for both!
OBEDIENCE
Though a highly intelligent individual, the Basenji usually approaches life with their own agenda. This independent trait is one reason they are NOT most peoples first choice in an obedience dog. That being said there are some who have enjoyed great success in this arena.
REGISTERED THERAPY DOG
Compassion and the love of attention equip some Basenjis for work as Certified Therapy Dogs.
CONFORMATION
To Ensure our Basenjis continue to conform to our breeds AKC standard, many of us choose to show our dogs to their conformation title.
(American Sighthound Field Association)

The Basenji is a SIGHT HOUND which means that they track and hunt using their keen sense of sight as apposed to a scent hound who uses their nose in tracking their prey.
