Gabe, who just turned 10, is Khamsin Trumpeter Gabriel.  I got him from Erin Roberts
when he was 3 years old. Piper, age 5, is a rescue who was picked up as a stray in
Houston, TX.  I've had her for 3 years now. My other two dogs (sometimes known as
"honorary basenjis") are also rescues.  Mel, who is 8, is a whippet/German Shepherd mix.
I adopted him from a shelter near Jefferson City. Barry (age 6) is a German Shepherd mix
that I adopted from the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, where I am a volunteer
and board member.  Some people have suggested that he is part basenji, which wouldn't
surprise me.  He's much more obsessed with gutting toys and ripping up dog beds than
either of my "real" basenjis are!
I got my first basenji, Trixie, in 2000.  Much to my relief, she turned out to be a lot
calmer and less destructive than I had expected after reading about the breed.  I
decided to get a basenji because I liked their size and the fact that they didn't have to be
clippered (I had a lakeland terrier previously).  I also liked their energy, independence,
and general quirkiness.  Living with a basenji can be a lot of fun, if you have a good
sense of humor.  I've been lucky to have basenjis who can be left uncrated, but every
once in a while, they decide to get
into some mischief.  Here's how Gabe celebrated his 10th birthday:
My basenjis are strictly pets.  I do not do any showing or lure
coursing, but I like to go to dog shows occasionally and to the Basenji
National when it is within reasonable driving distance.  All of my dogs have
been through basic obedience classes.  I walk my dogs daily(weather
permitting), and I sometimes take Gabe and Piper on trips with me.  They
like to play together or just hang out.

I joined the Show-Me Club because I like to be around other basenji people, and I have
made some good friends in the group.  Unfortunately, I don't get to very many meetings
because they are usually held at dog shows.  Since I'm not showing, it's not always worth
the effort for me to drive to a show.  The club is very much geared toward people who do
conformation or lure coursing, so it doesn't have as much to offer the basenji pet owner.
Still, belonging is a good way to make friends in the basenji world and to learn more about
the breed.
I am Eva Allen, and I live with four dogs, two of whom are basenjis.
