Dear Allie,
My name is Mokee Rehfeldt. I'm a 10 year old, very handsome and wise red man. I
don't believe we've ever met; but my humans know your humans, and word is that
you've been around and are also incredibly intelligent. I thought maybe since we
were very close in age, you would understand my situation a little better then some
of these pups. Unfortunately, my problem doesn't involve just young Basenjis. Let
me give you some background info.
Like I said, I've been the man of the house for 10 years now. I try to consider
myself a very humble and modest old man, but I've worked my curly tail off to get to
this dominant position. When I came here as a pup, there were a few other dogs
that I had to learn from. But with their departure, I took another step up the chain. A
year after I was born, I got a "step-brother", who is not a basenji at all. He is a
Chowsky, and has been my right hand man ever since. But now, I have a spoiled
brat of a step-sister, (who IS a basenji and was supposed to be my girlfriend) and 2
other dogs that my parents are looking after since their daughter can't have them
right now. Oh, one is a husky (my brothers mom) and the other is a black lab.
These dogs are clueless!
Being the man of the house, I take it as my responsibility to teach these newbies the
ropes around my domain. I try to be nice about it, but anytime I correct them I get in
trouble for being a bully. Ok, maybe I'm not so nice about it anymore, but what can
a man do? Its my house, and things need to be done a certain way. If they don't
raise to my expectations, they get put in their place. I feel like sometimes I'm
running a bootie camp. I want to make my Daddy proud of me and let him know that
I'm ready to fill his shoes; but when I yell at these other clowns, he yells at me. I tell
ya Allie, I don't know what I can do to control these yahoo's without getting my hide
fried for it. Please give me some of your expertise!
Your wise old friend,
Mokee Rehfeldt
Dear Mokee,
Gosh, I'm not sure if I have an answer this time. Because I, too, have had this
problem. I was in charge of all the animals here at my house until three years ago
when Debbie brought this puppy boy home with her. It has always been my job to
train all puppies here in this house, yet when I would make corrections with him,
Debbie would yell at me. (And believe me, he needed more than the usual number
of corrections.) She said I wasn't supposed to hurt him, but sometimes you just
need to shake them by the neck or sit on top of them. Now, after all I did for him, he
has taken over my top dog position. He expects me to still play with him, but I won't
do it because I'm still mad at him.
Do you still get any special treatment from the humans at your house? Even though I
don't get to run things anymore, I'm still the only bed dog which makes me feel a little
better. But when Debbie needs help with keeping the red boy under control, I just
turn and walk away and leave her by herself to deal with him. I am now retired from
working.
Humans just don't understand the way the world works. I guess they can't help it
that they're of lower intelligence. As long as they treat us older Basenjis like we're
special, I guess we can't complain too much.
By the way, you're 10 and I'm 12. You wanna get together sometime and talk about
the good old days?
Your friend,
Allie (who still looks like she's 6)
