Dear Allie,

I just got adopted two months ago.  Before that, I didn't really live in a house.  It's
nice being here, but there are so darned many rules!  Like that rule about pottying
outside, for instance.  Doesn't Mom realize there are perfectly good rugs to potty on
indoors?  No!  She thinks I should go outside, even when it's raining!  If I refuse to go
out, she actually carries me out in the rain and puts me down in the sopping wet
grass.  Then she stands around like a fool, saying, "Go potty!" while I scamper back
to the door and wait to go inside.  Sometimes we have to repeat this whole silly act
three or four times!

Could this be considered cruel and unusual punishment?  Should I try to find a new
mom who's more understanding?  Yesterday I stole the Classified section of the
newspaper and chewed over a few ads.  I thought someone might be looking for a
cute girl like me with a talent for choosing nice rugs to pee on.  But I didn't see
anything very promising.  What do you think I should do?  At least I get good treats
here, so maybe I should stay.

Pretty Piper

Dear Piper,

If you get good treats and you get to sleep in the human's bed, then you should
definitely stay.  Believe it or not, when I first went to live with Debbie, she and I went
round and round about where I was going to go potty.  Frankly, I don't see any
difference between that grass outside and this carpet that's inside.  They're both soft
on your feet.  And the humans never go outside to potty.  It's really not fair, is it?

Of course, if you're going to live with the humans, you will have to follow their rules no
matter how dumb they are.  At least your human does go out in the wet grass with
you.  And maybe you'll find other places to potty when it's raining like underneath the
porch or behind the lawn chairs or something.  I would definitely try to remember to
wait until you're outside.  Having a family to live with is definitely worth the effort.

Good luck,
Allie
