Dear Allie,
I am very upset. I don't get to "Go" anymore. I love to "Go". My mom and I would Go to the
dog shows all the time.....but we don't Go anymore. I don't know why. Everyone keeps
saying I am finished. What does that mean?....Allie, am I a has-been??? And who said I am
finished anyway?? I know no one asked me. I want to Go!!! Every work day I beg my mom
to "Go". I follow her around the house and just ask to "Go".
Allie, my mom went to a dog show without me. Why would she do that?? I don't think I was
bad. At the last dog show I was really good!! I don't know what I did, but I know I was good.
Everyone kept telling me so, and later some lady I didn't know said I was good and gave me a
huge chunk of chicken right off her plate!! So I am pretty sure I did not do anything bad.
It is not just the dog shows, I don't get to go to class anymore either. Mama used to take me
to class once a week and that was great. I loved my teacher. She had a ton of treats. I had
a best friend to play with after class, too. I get to go Chase every now and then. And mom
keeps telling me about how my therapy papers got messed up but they will be fixed soon.
Well, I guess that's good because I am going to need therapy if I don't get to Go soon.
Allie I am too young to be a has-been. What should I do??
Refusing to be finished!!

Dear Batman,
You absolutely are NOT a has-been. Being finished means that you are now a
"finished" champion, in other words, you finished earning your 15 points. You even
have a "Ch" in front of your name now, and everyone should be calling you Sir. See,
after you are finished, there is no point to entering the dog shows anymore because
you are so good that the other dogs wouldn't even need to show up. You stop going
to the shows as a courtesy to them. When you are older, you can start going again,
however. Some of the dog shows have special categories for the Veteran dogs, and
that is your chance to compete against the young pups and show them what a
handsome Basenji is supposed to look like! But you will have to wait until you are 7
years old for that.
Maybe you can get your human to take you to some other types of classes though.
She should be taking you somewhere every week so you don't get bored. You can
still go Chase, but you could go to a class for Agility or Obedience, too. Champion
dogs tend to have several talents and you could probably "finish" in those sports, too.
I have complete confidence in you. And after you get your therapy papers, you'll be
Going a lot to visit sick people. That's a very important job. I used to go visit old
people myself. There were certain people that needed me to get up in bed with
them, and others that just needed the crumbs cleaned up from around their beds.
Only special dogs can do that therapy stuff.
So don't panic. I think you will get to Go somewhere really soon.
Your friend,
Allie (who will still Go when she isn't taking a nap)
