Show-Me Basenji Club Code Of Ethics
General:
1) Members should consider themselves the custodian of the breed and conduct
themselves in such a way that their actions are not detrimental to the Basenji or
Show-Me Basenji Club.

2) Members should maintain the dogs in their care according to the highest standards.
Providing proper housing, food, medical care, exercise and socialization are the basis of
ethical behavior.

3) Members should exemplify the highest standard of sportsmanship in and out of the
show ring.

Breeding Considerations:
1) The breeders foremost consideration should always be the preservation and
advancement of the breed. Every breeding should be selective, carefully considering
health, temperament, structure and type.

2) Basenjis whose parents or grandparents are known to have been effected with
genetic problems such as: Hemolytic Anemia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Coloboma,
Hip Dysplasia, Immunoproliferative Small Intestinal Disease, or Fanconi Syndrome
should NOT be bred unless tested clear for the defect.

3) Breeders should only breed when they are willing and able to maintain with proper
exercise, nutrition, housing and socialization all puppies produced until they can be
placed in suitable homes. The same responsibility applies to any puppies returned by
buyers.

4) Breeders should use their stud dogs only on bitches who will improve the breed and
they should in no event use the stud on a bitch whose owner would not subscribe to this
code.

5) Bitches should not be bred until their second heat, or after their 1st birthday
whichever should come first.

Sales Contracts:
The AKC and the Show-Me Basenji club strongly recommend that all dogs be sold on
contract. Such Contacts should:

1) Require that all puppies be sold on limited registration and spay or neuter agreements,
unless the breeder believes them to be of show or breeding quality.

2) Stipulate that the breeder has the right to reprocess any dog that is not receiving
proper care. The breeder should reserve the right to buy back the dog if the buyer
cannot keep it. Breeders are expected to be responsible for all care and expenses
associated with any dog of their breeding that becomes involved in a rescue situation in
the event that unusual conditions make it impossible for them to assume responsibility of
the dog.

3) Guarantee the health of each puppy for a period of time sufficient to allow the buyer to
obtain a health examination. Puppies who do not pass such examinations should be
replaced. Longer health guarantees for Hereditary health problems are strongly
recommended.

In addition the seller should always openly and honestly discuss all health, temperament
and conformation concerns with prospective buyers.

Under no circumstances should any puppy ever be sold to a Broker, Pet Store, or any
other third party. All sales should be to the ultimate owner directly.
